JellyBean2605
I sympathise Bluekarin, my in-laws are drinkers and we get "happy hour" phone calls regularly and now don't answer the phone after a certain time of night. Usually it's just a load of garbled rubbish but we do get the occasional "she's on a mission" where my MIL gets a thing in her head and is determined to sort it at all costs (once she rang a hotel my husband was planning to stay at repeatly over a minor issue, then kept calling us to give updates) We have tried to address the issue of the drink but the last time we tried resulted in a horrendous row that went on for hours and never really got resolved. All we can do now is try to ignore it as she knows full well she has a problem and that we hate it but doesn't care!
bluekarin
I am glad, but also sad, that someone knows what I am on about. They have been drinkers all their lives. They used to live oop north and were fairly wealthy, and thought nothing of downing a bottle of gin or whiskey each every day Thankfully, in a way, they lost all that and ended up living in France with no money and so couldn't afford the spirits just cheapest of the cheap French wine. I think that has actually saved them. I just get so tired of the late night, usually Sunday, where they are blotto and repeat everything, and then I have to speak to the other one which is why the calls are screened. Ah well, after hubby told his mum off yesterday, I am sure we won't hear from them for a little while.
JellyBean2605
It is sad when people choose to throw their lives away like that, my in-laws attitude is "we're over sixty, it's our lives, we'll do what we want and if we die a bit sooner than so be it". To be fair my FIL isn't too bad (he has diabetes) and does try and curb his wife's drinking where possible but she wears the trousers. In their own homes they can do what they like, it's just when it gets to the point where we can't even have a child's birthday party in the family without a drunken incident. Oh well
The Dogmother
I sympathise; my late ex-MiL was an alcoholic, she would ring me (even long after I'd divorced her son) to scream and swear at me in the small hours. I was lone with a tiny baby, so wasn't too amused and ended up turning the phone off.
sparkysmum
Just got tickets to see Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats on Monday Ecstatic to be going but cant help reflecting on the the terrible sadness in the Geldof family. I know he hasnt always been the way he is now but what an amazing guy and a fab band. So to be touring again after all this time

Daphne
I live in a tiddly hamlet where nothing happens and "Ooops, word censored!"ody lives. We are up 500m up a hill - it takes a normal car 10-15 mins to drive up from the main road. Tomorrow we have 3 car rallies speeding past the house The national Champs, the regional Champs, and some race for old cars involving at least one Datsun and one Escort We live on a smooth straight after a 1:4 hill (up) and a sharp bend, but 0.5 mile away is a 1:4 hill (down) followed by a sharp right and then a left where you crawl at 10mph as there is a house which sticks out into the road. If I lived at the bottom of that 1:4 I would be terrified of finding a car in my house! TBH I am terrified anyway - we are protected by some fearsome black and yellow tape from the vagaries of the speeding cars
The Dogmother
I hope you're safe Daphne. There's a house near us, on a notorious hill, and it regularly has a car embedded in it

Daphne
OK - the rally was great fun The porsche was by far the quickest and noisiest, followed by a Williams Clio. All of the men of the hamlet (that's 4 of them plus us) were on a hill watching and drinking jeropigou (like a light port) at 9.30am Something black would be my go-to outfit for a gig - not very original Skinny black jeans and something nice on top

Purplemaniacs
Just after 6.00 this morning I was in bed thinking I would get up in a few minutes (archery competition to organise today) when I heard this loud engine. Panic, whats that, OH is away this weekend so I am on my own. I leap out of bed and see the neighbours Land Rover being driven away on a low loader. Still dark so I can't get much details from the vehicle and at the wrong angle for the number plate. Not sure what to do, think it is an odd time to be moving a Land Rover, so I throw some clothes on and dash next door all in darkness. Come home and ring, a sleepy neighbout answers, "Oh it's ok my brother is taking the vehicle to Scotland! Didn't you see it last night he arrived about 8.00 but was too tired to collect the Land Rover and carry on his jounrey so he stayed the night" No I didn't see it as I was on my own I closed the curtains once it was dark and stayed in, the tv was probably on and I was in the land of Stictly Thinking about it the dogs did bark once so I bet that was what they barked for. Now to the rest of the day. I feel like I have done a days worrying all ready, need a sleep not an archery torunament. Chrissie

PixieDust
Ooooh looks exciting! OH'S mate over today. OH will play the drums whilst Dave will play guitar. I am told they are going to play Nirvana. It's a nod to my Dave Grohl obsession but OH won't really admit it. *whispers* he's a bit jealous! I will be cooking toad in the hole, mash, peas and gravy for afternoon lunch with apple pie and custard for pudding then get on with my final essay!
