soapdragon
I have always used a pull along Miele on our carpets however, as I suspect it is nearing the end of its natural, I have just borrowed an upright Dyson to see how that compares. I am shocked With just one go over the sitting room and hall (which are hardly huge) I nearly filled the cylinder. Having gone over it all again....it pulled out about the same amount! The carpet itself (dark blue and cream very thin stripe) looks much cleaner and far less grey (not surprising, really!) I always thought that Miele were a great, quality make but the difference is staggering; I guess down to the row of revolving brushes?! Whilst we can't run to a Dyson proper will certainly get an upright with brushes next tho' I am slightly concerned about the performance on 'hard' floors as the kitchen is lino type. Also stairs are harder when you have to pull out the attachment. OH says there are lots of good deals about and, having had to head off to theatre this afternoon for an unforseen op. (he SHOULD be on hols!) has threatened to stop off at a Tesco or Sainsbury to buy one (he was THAT amazed at the difference and so it must have been pretty good!!) Thoughts on makes other than Dyson anyone? Edited to add; Am just about to tackle the bedrooms (what I can reach of the boy's anyway ) bathroom and landing ....... goodness knows how bad they will be
chickencam
I have always sworn by Dyson. I have had 3 over the years and have had two of them repaired under their 5 year guarantee just inside the guarantee period . I did seriously think about getting a Miele last time because I had heard good reports of them on here. I wouldn't go cheap though, false economy. We had a Vax bagless in the office for a while and it was worse than useless! We now have a Henry in the office which is pretty good but I still think that the Dyson with its brushes and bagless collection beats it hands down. Grandmashazzie
We had opposite to you, we had a dyson and then got an upright Miele and found difference amazing! Prob cause dyson was clapped out. Miele is great for carpets but we have Henry for wooden and tiled floors. A bit of a pain as we have little storage space. Miele upright has brushes but very heavy. Sil-El
I used to have a Dyson but found that after a couple of years it lost it's "suck" and with 2 cats, 2 birds and a husband, it just wasn't doing the job any more. I got a Miele upright Cat and Dog about 5 years ago and it's brilliant! It is noisy and heavy compared to the Dyson but I've found it to be so much more effective and powerful. Personally, I'd never go back to a Dyson, and I have friends who say the same, they're good for a while but just don't seem to have the staying power of other brands. Ursula123
Miele without a doubt. My Miele cat and dog is approx 14 years old, my SIL borrowed it in September and could not believe the results on her carpets and has since got one herself as did my friend. Have to confess that I love hoovering, I know I'm strange
CatieB
My vote is for Dyson. Mine has the staying power, I've had it too long to remember and it still amazes me how much it picks up. Mine is the brush head cylinder type which I don't think they make anymore. Probably about 10 years old. Also love love love the hand held one I have. And their customer service has always been fab to me.
soapdragon
I wonder if this is actually a case of upright v cylinder type? The brushes on the Dyson upright are clearly far superior to the vague bristley thinygs on the Miele pull along. I remain amazed and shocked at how much grot and dust the Dyson collected when I thought my carpets had been cleaned by the pull along Miele! Blackrocksrock
Dyson every single time but you need to keep it clean and the filters clean and washed. If you keep it like that it keeps going for years - mine is 10 years old - the brushes switch off for hard floors so dont beat the lino or wooden floor. Mine is the older type - I am not keen on the ball type. I also have the little rechargable one - given it from my son and its good too - Dyson every time. mullethunter
When old Dyson broke we thought surely other makes can't be that different. We bought a fairly expensive Hoover and it was absolutely useless compared to the Dyson. We actually gave it away in the end and got another Dyson. Wouldn't have anything else. That said my mum has a Miele and says it's brilliant.
Beantree
We ended up with two Dysons, an upright 'animal' for dog hairs in carpet (brilliant for that) and a cylinder to reach the difficult high areas on the stairs and ceilings/ beams. They both therefore have advantages and disadvantages. My preference is for the cylinder, but it isn't as good on carpets as the upright. Both are awkward to empty and clean and as said the filter needs to be cleaned regularly. Haven't tried a Miele simply because they are so expensive. Valkyrie
Uprights are better for carpets due to the beating action that the brushes have. I have had Dysons for years. Currently not fond of the new one though. Yes it is powerful but the bin is too small and narrow and the big ball is way too heavy and cumbersome to control. DS has a smaller version and wondered about getting one like mine - tested it and said "crikey - that's heavy!" and this coming from a little muscle man! I can't remember my first hoover but as my mum had a cylinder electrolux that was quite vintage (same model in the local museum!) and was pretty good - so we thought. I never liked mine and changing the bag wasn't good for hayfever and snuffle allergies! Next was a Vax. It was OK and it washed carpets brilliantly - although didn't really suck up enough water so they were damp for a short while. Then I kept getting static shocks. Next came the Dyson and my first upright. Amazing. Lasted years although the static was pretty bad. New Dyson - more static. Still good although the attachments from the first machine didn't fit the second. Finally decided on a big ball. Still static - sometimes lovely blue charges (I have that with most things - I seem to be a little conductor - even irons) and the suction is so powerful that the ancient carpet in the hallway and living room looks good as new, although the underlay has been sucked into little mounds as it's disintegrated underneath! The hallway looks like a mole has tried to come up in a couple of spots. Living room seems to be fine though - probably not so much wear and tear. And the old attachments again do not fit this new one, although they did fit DD's boyfriend's Dyson, so not wasted. That would also be a big gripe - attachments should be interchangeable. The electric cable is very long so I don't need to unplug it to use upstairs - it reaches all corners from the hallway with ease. I wouldn't bother with the cordless unless you have all over non-carpeted - the bin is next to useless and the time is pretty short before recharging. Word of wisdom from the carpet man (DH) uprights are better for carpets because the beating brings particles of dirt up to the surface to be sucked away whereas cylinders don't do the deeper cleaning and it's those particles that do the damage over time. Or something like that. He doesn't say anything about the little flying saucers with cats sitting on them though. Maybe he thinks cats come with the machine and is scared I'd want one. Blackrocksrock
I remember using my vax one saturday morning and not being happy with the carpet after I had gone over and over it - so decided to go to the town 20 miles away and buy a dyson - I went to the shop and when they came and asked if I needed help said only if you know all about the Dyson and show me how it all works - she did and I came home with it - the animal - I was like Soapdragon - went over the hall carpet I had already done that morning, well was ashamed at what came off it and every other room - I am still amazed at what it picks up, son bought the cordless for his car - it was not really good for that so I ended up with it - it really only gets used for kitchen floor and quick run over between the big dyson and if you spill flour or rice or something - it comes into its own!! Mine is the older one and we had the ball at work and I hated it - I have bought a second hand 2nd dyson for spares off gumtree for mine and it works better than mine as the parts are now not available from Dyson economically now. It was very worth it as my handle broke and so I had a spare. I hope it keeps going for some time as I love it. Easy to empty and the bin is easy to wash out. Groovychook
I have a Miele and a Dyson. My Mum gifted me her old Miele and ever since, the Dyson has been in the cupboard under the stairs. I've since bought a new Miele and love it. It has to cope with a lot of pet hair in this house and performs really well. It's less cumbersome than the Dyson too
chickencam
The Dysons are very heavy and noisy. I didn't know that Miele did uprights though.
soapdragon
OH has just arrived home bearing a Dyson DC40 from Tesco in the sale! Looks quite small but then we don't live in a mansion! The borrowed one has to go back home tomorrow....I moved our two sofas in the sitting room yesterday and cleaned underneath with the big one and it filled up
The Dogmother
I don't have any carpets, but I have a Miele dog and cat cylinder vacuum and find it to be absolutely brilliant, that's with 2 mucky hounds, one cat and various grubby teenagers around! clucker1
The same as DM here, mucky dog, mucky teenagers! One Miele cat and dog vacuum plus we have carpet upstairs which I use the turbo brush on and it's fab. It's my third Miele in 25 years, number 3 has been with me for just under a year.....I'm brutal with my vacuums....they get a lot of use. I used a Dyson when we hired a holiday cottage and for me, I hated all the dirt whizzing around plus the machine didnt work very well.
