Lockdown

Recommended Posts

My sister lives in Christchurch and they feel under seige.  Can’t leave the garden and shops are heaving so that’s an issue.  They feel more locked down than when it was strict lockdown.  My son in law comes from Paignton.  Similar picture.   The dilemma for the locals in those places is that the area needs the revenue, but not the virus.    It’s meaning that visitors are getting a mixed reception.  In some villages so I’m told the local shops are only serving locals.  Apart from anything else, they have limited supplies.  So the advice some holiday lets are giving holiday makers there is to take food with them.

We’ve decided to stay put in 2020 and just socialise with family in the garden.

For only the second time in my toothy history I get an abscess. Right now, when things are difficult. Something weird happened this morning when I brushed my teeth and the dentist thought that maybe the abscess burst. It did get a lot less painful after that. Anyway I've got some amoxycillin just in case there's an infection but he can't do any surgery right now. Hopefully it will settle down nicely.

However it meant I had to give in and wear a mask. This is mine.

I like the idea of a mask parade. Let's see your masks! 🎭

I have a Playmobil face mask! You can was in the dishwasher and it has a filter compartment where you put the paper filter in. Haven’t worn it yet, as we only have to wear them in the public transport and I luckily can get everywhere by motorcycle or bicycle.

Cool masks!

My daughter wants to come for a weekend here.  So nervous about it, but my family and I miss them all.  She and her other half are going into work and coming into contact with customers, although screens are set up and cleaning each time.  They had an audit thing the other day to check that they are complying with the regulations - they thought they'd done well, but there is more they have to do.  But she will be bringing her kittens - adorable bundles of floof!  Long journey for them though, but I think they are so well chilled out from car rides that they'll be fine.  I will get them working in the veg patch and cleaning out chickens and feisty duck mamas!

Had to go to the dentist yesterday, all very clinical even a footbath at the door.  We have a new lad - only 27!  He said that he used to see 30 patients per day and it is only 6 daily now.  When a room is used it is left for an hour - they have disinfectant air thingies and each room is cleaned within an inch of its life!  Very weird times.  I actually felt really safe in there.

The town is much more busy - it was a ghost town even before lockdown - everyone anticipated it and stayed away.  I saw more people wearing masks there than in Tiverton.  Perhaps crossing counties makes people a bit more hmmm, need a word - aloof isn't it, but close.  Probably que sera sera, false sense of security?  Dunno.  Actually probably more like obstinate!

I went to the dentist a couple of weeks back - screens at reception, dentist wore a little more PEP than usual, and was accompanied by one of the other dentists as the nurses are still furloughed. Their usual thorough hygiene, but nothing more

I popped into town today - I am not one for visiting the shops if I can help it - it looked pretty much like a normal Saturday TBH. A few less people around and some shops still closed. The roads are getting busier now, which is  a shame as I quite liked it being quieter and more sedate.

Bring it on!

I was hoping to get my Painting Group meeting again in the Autumn but have just been sent the Government guidance which is being issued to Village Halls about reopening.  Apparently, many  are deciding they can’t comply and so will remain closed to all but essential users until 2021.  Even if the ones we use decide to reopen, I don’t think we as a group will be able to undertake the extra deep cleaning etc which will be a condition of use.   Many of our members are in the elderly and vulnerable group so we can’t take risks.  So I think we’ll be staying on Zoom.  Thank goodness we have that!

Just been on the news was an article about these masks printed with the lower half of the face. They had a setup in a supermarket where you went to a photo booth and the picture came out onto a transfer print which was then heat/pressure applied to a mask. The staff are wearing them in restaurants and bars apparently, but at 22€ for a mask than can only be washed 8 to 10 times it's not something I'd buy (and some would say my face is better covered).

Lunchtime French TV news headlines said "Pubs open in England" and I just couldn't watch the article because I just knew it would be embarrassing, having been told earlier that people were queueing at 8.00am to get a place inside one Pub in the Midlands. I gather a spokesperson for the emergency services said they are expecting "chaos" later today.

My daughter said that their local pubs were open at 6am this morning - I didn't believe her!  But she saw them open as she was going to work!  Ludicrous.  Unless they are hoping to make up for social distancing - hopefully soft drinks and teas and coffees or possibly breakfasts were being served at that hour.

I'm so fed up with how this release of lockdown is talked down in the press. It's been pretty bad in city centres on an almost nightly basis with illegal street parties and attacks on police. Just that nobody bothers to report that. The BBC didn't bother greatly reporting about all the beaches where people behaved beautifully much as they won't bother reporting about all the pubs where people go out for a refreshing and friendly drink and everything is cool. Main stream media in this country seems to loathe their own countrymen and culture. I think a lot of people are so excited and relieved and maybe they will lose it but that's pretty standard behaviour in normal times and not just in Britain.

We really do seem to have lost respect for our fellow humans. It fills me with horror.......I do keep stressing to my boys that you should show respect and kindness to others. That and the ability to use a loo brush are so under rated.

We are in a small village so cushioned from the mega stupid city centres but we seem to have created such a Me, Me, society. At the risk of generalising, the 18/30 age group just don't seem to 'get it' . It makes me sad. During the first World War there were lads of 16 trying to sign up to fight for their country by falsifying their ages...........now many 16 year olds are just glued to electronic devices and worse!

This makes me feel very old........I am desperatley hoping that my lads and their peers are on the same wavelength and, if enough of us manage to instill the same ethics, it will make a difference. Already it's clear that there is a huge divide between tho students at my boy's secondary. ES is year 10.......so 1st year GCSE, and YS is yr 7 - working online and abandoned. I am so lucky that both my lads are bright and motivated and working hard but it's increasingly obvious that many are just not bothered and have done little or no work and are prepared to 'blame' Covid for robbing them of their education. Oh dear. Sorry! Feeling upset at the whole thing when there is nothing that we can do but our best.

If it makes you feel better my son's generation were nicknamed the PlayStation generation and there was general despair of their capabilities. Then Iraq and Afghanistan happened and those lads and lasses really proved their qualities. My son actually did that thing, he was already in the army, he joined at 16 and when they were told to queue up for registration to be sent over or something or other he queued up even though he was only 17. He got sent back to barracks but my point is that it's in these kids still, they just don't know it.

I experience this now daily. Loads of kids just mentally checked out and they didn’t do squat diddly doo. But now blame school for not providing. I gave a few kids 1.0  (out of 10) because they simply didn’t hand in an assignment, saying that I didn’t tell them! Seriously? You haven’t heard me during all those lessons online???

The forum said it wouldn't save the edit so I've rewritten it in case it didn't appear

Also, the RAF museum is opening on Monday. I have a tradition with two of my sons that in early August we go for a visit. The café has tables under the wings of the Sunderland and we like to have a coffee there. My FIL flew Lancasters and Sunderlands so I always like to share a thought with him there. He died far too early in his fifties so it's a sort of connection. Anyway, we've booked our arrival time and I'm very excited about the visit. 🌸 🤩 💖
