Lockdown

Recommended Posts

I have let my hair grow long and grey against all the fashion advice and I love it. I read a lot about how it looks best short and that hair goes co***** and all sorts of stuff that I ignored and it's now long and wavy and I'm proud of my grey.

Had another mooch into London today. Making the most of it before the mayor tries to shut it down. It's definitely busier and a few shops have opened up with counters across the doorways to serve people. I like that, it's a good idea. Clapham Common was very busy but all the people I saw, who were mainly young were having fun and looking relaxed and being responsible. It felt good. We did a drive thru Starbucks and a drive thru KFC just because we could and it felt like a holiday.

😂 I was trying to write coa. rse!

Lockdown seemed a good time to learn some languages so I've been carrying on with my Japanese and learning some French and German, or not so much learning the French and German but reminding myself of school girl phrases.

The kanji part of Japanese is complicated because it has two readings, Japanese and Chinese so I've started Chinese today. It seems like a fun thing to do and might help but the interesting thing is that I learned hello and goodbye and I think that the Chinese for goodbye is the name of the Chinese rocket in The Martian. I thought that was quite exciting but now I've written it down it doesn't sound very exciting!

Hello All, I keep popping on to say hello, but there is too much to catch up on! I've been "staying home", for my own safety, and my loved ones. Definitely no going to the beach etc here!

I've been catching up on house work and garden, although both very slowly. I have finally rehomed my Eglu to a dear friend. She will make good use of it I'm sure.

I've done more every day cooking, as my OH is busier than ever, and also more baking,  but not huge amounts as there is only a few of us to eat it!

I hope you are all keeping well, Cathy x x

They are announcing the terms of the second stage of unlockdown today. Press reports so far are confusing to say the least. All the numbers are going down steadily though, although it's still too early to say whether stage one was safe and things could well slide backwards this week. We're staying in, except for essentials. Went to the chicken feed store to find that only 5 were allowed into the shop and there was a big queue outside. Things weren't helped by someone standing in the doorway chatting, so no-one could pass and maintain their distance.

I'm not sure I like the idea of  tracker apps at all. It strikes me that the people who will be punished through them are the very people and their families that we've all been thanking for the last few weeks. My family for example, two of them especially, will probably have been exposed to the bug through work. If they use the app as it is planned and are positive then the rest of my family would be off work. Firstly we can't afford that, overtime is important not a whim and that's also four key workers out of action. That would be duplicated all over the country surely.

So I'm interested in this tracker tracker. Who's watching the watchers etc.

A tracker app has been approved for use here yesterday. No use to us as we don't go anywhere and haven't smart phones. We also have investigating teams doing the same job, which is how they keep finding infection centres; lots of Companies where a large number of staff are infected, infectious and don't realise it.

Interesting point about tracker apps Jude. Although I'm going almost nowhere I don't trust the government with my personal data so won't be downloading

Me neither; I used to work with app developers and know how unreliable and 'data leaky' they can be. (some) People just need to be taught how to use commonbleedingsense, that and clear guidelines are essential. Rory Stewart has been talking some good sense throughout the pandemic period.

Rory Stewart has been talking a lot of sense generally. It's a shame he had to stop his spending a night with Londoners, whilst it only gives you a snapshot I thought it was a great idea to get to see a variety of people. Too few politicians have any idea about real people's lives.

I went to the launderette today!!!!!! Drove to Wheatley, a large village about 9 miles away, with two summer weight duvets (mine and an elderly, self isolating friends) and had a lovely time - felt like a real outing! The first time I've left our village in weeks. Then OH and I called in at a small, independent garden centre on the way home for compost (got the very last bag of anything usable to grow stuff in). Also a tray of 6 multi coloured lobelia plug plants for the pots 'out front' (have to keep up appearances  - very Hyacinth Buckett!)

Monty is 'doing' tomato plants on GW tonight - will be watching as mine are looking feeble and anemic (sp?) and a tad crispy leaved. Obviously something wrong but I've done nothing different to usual so will be interesting to see what 'The Don' has to say!

That first trip out is amazing isn't. I felt like I'd been on a little holiday, I felt so refreshed.

It's starting to really buzz here again. Non stop traffic, more pedestrians. Still less tubes and hardly any planes but it feels good.

Groups of teens out, that's not a complaint, I'm happy to see them enjoying the sun but I don't understand the objection to their schooling restarting if they've made the decision to socialise anyway.

Enjoy your get togethers!

I am glad you are getting out and about - slower up here and I am very wary still and think we still need to be careful very careful as it could come back as a second wave god forbid.   There are more vehicles here and the usual young boy racers have never stopped really.   All our whisky distilleries are closed so much less lorry traffic here though which is a bonus.  Thankfully retired last year and can just do my own thing.  Who said Scotland was cold?  27.4 degrees here and max round about was 28 degrees today - was lovely

Enjoy!  We are slightly ahead of you here, as we have been unlocked in part for a few weeks now, although still with restrictions and masks on in all indoor situations.  However, we have an outbreak again in a part of Lisbon, so that is being closed down again, I am so glad to see it, it gives me confidence that the Govt is taking it seriously.  It took me a while to grasp the opportunity, but since I have been out both socially for a drink, and into a shop, I feel like a new woman.  Or rather, just like the old one before she was shut away for 2 months.

I wish GW didn't clash with HIGNFY!  I also want tomato advice but OH is keener on being amused, can't say I blame him in these circs!

I follow Japanese progress and they have a city which has some new cases too. They have teams of people set up to swoop into an area to deal with any surges. It seems like a good idea to deal with it as localised issue. I guess most countries will have similar plans. Our friend in Tokyo has just got out after 12 weeks in prison as he called it. He's pretty happy to be released.

Not sure if that last bit was going to save.... Daphne, if you check out YouTube you might find gardeners world on there. If you search Monty Don rather than the programme name that might help. I don't know, I haven't tried but it might work. If not then you'll certainly find a host of other gardening channels. I saw Sarah Raven ( I think that's right), I think it was her who seemed to have a youtube channel. I think a few of them have their own thing going on. I might research that myself today.

I had an e mail from a friend this morning; 'If you haven't put on at least a stone in weight, become a raving alcoholic and have hair that looks like you've been repeatedly dragged through a hedge backwards then you haven't been taking lockdown seriously!' I'm not quite that bad (yet!) but getting there!
