We have been burgled - Update Pg3

Recommended Posts

OMG I’m in a real state

Went to bed late about 12.30 watched BBC programme on cranial surgery that finished at 12.20 went to bed soon after that.

About 1.20 hubby woke up (he’s very light sleeper) as he heard a noise down stairs – first thought it was the cats wondering about jumping down from table or something. Then another noise looked out bedroom window to see 2 men driving off in our VW. I woke up at the second noise. I phoned the police who came very quickly – it would seem that they forced the front door and took the bowl of keys in the hall way. Left my mulberry hand bag (which was on hall table), laptops etc just took the car. The Police were here very quickly.

The front door, PVC, was locked handle up, but not locked with the key and the police say that the burglars have a tool that fits thru the letter box that can pull the door handle down (which disengages the door locking bolts) and they then forced the door – there are marks on the frame. Hand inside and took the bowl of keys. Keys to both our cars & house keys. They also unlocked the second car but left it - I think after being disturbed by OH - but they have both sets of keys to that car as well

DO NOT Leave keys near any doors and make sure the doors are locked properly.

Now all the palaver of changing locks etc. contacting insurance

AHHHHH

How horrible for you, nasty people. Really does annoy me. Thankfully we've only ever had a theft from our shed.

I suppose the only good thing is to say that at least no-one was harmed, that's what I always worry about.

I hope it all gets sorted quickly.

oh that's dreadful, so sorry - but at least you are safe, and you managed to stop them taking the second car. we were burgled when we were both out at work - front window jemmied up, in and out through that with TV, VCR, camera, etc etc - must have taken them a good half an hour, and the window was right on the street - no one saw anything though.

That's just awful, so sorry to hear about your burglary. It's easy for me to say, but at least no one was hurt and they've taken something which can, hopefully, be replaced. It's just awful for you both, I can't begin to imagine how you are feeling. Hugs to both of you .

So sorry to hear this Mummyhen. What a terribly upsetting thing to happen. We all feel we should be safe in our own homes.

Thank goodness you and your hubby are both okay and that nothing personal was taken. I hope that the police can find and bring to justice the people who did this.

These sort of burglaries are common and even have their own name. I believe they are called 'cane and hook' burglaries. A bend wire coat hanger can be used to swipe your car keys from your front door table :anxious:

I don't have a letterbox in my front door, just one in the porch. This sort of thing was happening when I renovated my house so decided against a letterbox in the door. I was also swayed by a friend having petrol poured through his door and the house set on fire. Cat flaps are also used as point of access.

*rude word*. What makes people think they have a right to do this sort of thing?

So sorry to hear about this, I can't imagine how awful it must have been to wake up and think someone was in your house.

We were burgled some years ago, they got in through a slightly open quarterlight window. They got out easily because, although the patio doors were locked and fitted with extra locks, the keys were left in situ. We hadn't tought about the need to make it harder for burglars to get out.

Since then, we always double lock everything. No keys are left anywhere near any door, we have hooks (in an odd place) in the kitchen where the car and door keys are stored so that we can find them easily in the event of a fire. We also have a simple device fitted to the front door which prevents the door being pushed open from the outside. I don't mean one of those chain things, it's an ancient thing which was with the house when we bought it.

I know it doesn't feel like you've been at all lucky, but at least they only took the car and you'l; be able to get your locks etc changed.

So sorry to hear that but glad that you are all unharmed, what an awful thing to happen and I daresay you've got a bit of hassle to get things sorted, but I hope it's not too bad and gets done very quickly. Trying to be positive what a good job that your hubby is a light sleeper & disturbed them, a car is replaceable but you aren't!

Do you get the community emails from the local police? They're pretty good at letting you know what's happening locally. You probably don't want to leave the house at the mo but if you do feel like a cuppa and a rant, you are welcome at my house anytime :D

I'm so sorry to hear that, my sister had the exact same thing happen to her and their car was stolen to order. Fortunately it was fitted with a tracker.

I have all my doors and windows locked, the windows are fitted with locked restrictors so that I can have them open at night without someone being able to get in. Like WitchHazel I'm a belt and braces girl.

I hope that your insurance will cough up as you were locked :?

Sorry to hear this. :(

There seems to be a lot of this sort of thing happening at the moment, we had warnings on local radio about making sure that keys were not left near doors and to make sure that all doors and windows were locked at night. We loved our keys so that we could get them easily but they were out of sight to a casual observer. We also hide all keys that are left behind when we are away, you just have to remember where you hid them when you come back

I hope that you get everything sorted without too much trouble ((hugs))

Thank you all for your kind words – I’m fortunate to have so many Omlet friends :)

It’s been hectic here this morning

The locks to the 3 doors in the house have been changed.

New keys ordered for the car they left behind but took the keys – car has been disabled

Visits from the Scenes of crime officer – unfortunately found nothing of any use

Visit from the PCSO – to put us on the newsletter distribution list and to give us their number. Apparently we live in the second safest ward in the borough. :!:

Phone call from the burglary squad – they did say that the car may be in the area parked up. The burglars do this to check if a tracker is fitted and if the car is still there in a day or so then they come back to take it

Phoned the insurers – someone will contact me after the weekend

Spoke to neighbours to let them know

So glad hubby only saw them from the upstairs window - godness only knows what would have happend it he had seen them in the hallway

I’m exhausted – I shall put my feet up this pm - after I've made birthday cake for sons girl friend.

I know that you have a lot on your hands Rachel, but do you have any PIR lighting outside the house? You can get some very cheap ones from Homebase at the moment and they are well worth it as a deterrent. I'd also put up some CCTV signs.... even if you don't have one!

I was woken up at 4am by the dogs going mad - they never bark at night. I looked out of the bathroom window and one of the PIR lights had come on, I thought I heard footsteps but may have been mistaken. My house is end of terrace and has an access alleyway down one side. We've had problems in the street in the past with folk bunking over the walls from the street behind us; if anyone sets foot in my alleyway or through the back gate, the whole house lights up and the dogs go mental... they'd have to be very foolish to try getting into my place

So sorry to hear it, it's upsetting (and I have been burgled - more than once) but as others have said, at least "Ooops, word censored!"ody was injured and it's 'only' the car.

I realised after the first time I was burgled that actually the things that would matter to me are books, photographs and the like - electrical equipment and other stuff can be replaced. It helps me to get it in perspective, yes it's still annoying and irritating and upsetting but worse things happen.

I never leave keys out - they are hidden in a drawer, and handbag is placed well out of reach of the door/cat-flap etc, because I've heard of this sort of thing happening. However you have to live life, no good getting paranoid about it - stuff happens, and it sounds as if you're getting things sorted out. An 'anti-jemmy' strip on the door, which I think is what is mentioned above, might be good - the CPO should be able to advise on things like that.
