What is your Woolies turning in to?

Recommended Posts

Ours is supposed to become a discount store......OUCH

Meanwhile it stands forlorn and forsaken with the detritus of a shop with a broken heart strewn all over the floor inside; shelves on their sides, empty boxes, dust and in the middle of it all a few pick 'n' mix sweeties lying on the ground.

So :cry::cry::cry::cry:

Ours is looking very sad too :( It is fast becoming covered in bill stickers, not a good look

There's talk of ours becoming an Iceland but as it's in the middle of a pedestrian zone with no parking nearby, I can't see how that's going to work  . We're hoping that our small Wilkinsons will move into the site and expand their stock as we only have half the things for sale that the Peterborough and Oakham branches sell. It's still empty and sad with no sign of anything happening to it at the moment though. Such a shame.

Ours has opened already as the discount store B & M's. There's hell on amongst the wealthy OAP's for it lowering the tone of the town as it's now on a big corner plot and not hidden away. Mind you they were the same about Home Bargains when that opened where Iceland used to be and as for their views on the Conservative Club being turned into an Aldi

Billericay is getting an Iceland - which is barking 'cos "Ooops, word censored!"ody wanted it and the town council protested. There are already 2 supermarkets on the high street, Somerfield does little business compared to Waitrose. Apparantly it was the only Woolies in South East Essex to be bought by Iceland.

Last time I looked, ours was still contibuting to the general ill health of the town centre :(

Same here :( Someone on our local papers letters page suggested they put in an indoor market which I think is a fab idea. I did hear that one in Bournemouth/Poole was taken over by the former manageress and she has called it Well Worth's or something like that.

Nantwich is B&M. Bet the Dabbers (Nantwich people) don't like that! Ha ha. They think they are quite posh you see & go round with their wicker shopping barrrrrskets (baskets).

Not really sure what we need on the high streets, as every town is the same these days...

Greggs

Claires

Monsoon

Accessorize

BHS

M&S

River Island

Evans

New Look

Dorothy Perkins

Topshop / Topman

Burtons

Home Bargains

Poundland

To name just a few. Bring back the little independent shops! Who these days is lucky enough to have...

1. An independent bakery

2. A fruit & veg shop

3. A wool shop ( very rare these days)

4. A non - chain butchers

We in Sandbach do actually have a fruit & veg shop & 2 butchers, but where I live - all the shops have gone apart from a hairdressers, a chemist & a newsagents (now run by Indians). It's terrible. We used to have a fab chippy, a lovely corner shop with pies & fresh cream cakes, a gorgeous flower shop & lots of other shops before I moved here.

I feel incredibly lucky in where I live. We have 3 independent bakeries, 2 non chain butchers one of which is organic only, which I can't really afford. 2 really amazing fruit and veg shops and a fresh fish shop, no wool shop though. The only chains that we have are Boots, KFC  a Tesco Metro  and a Starbucks We the residents have fought tooth and nail to keep chains away, so far it's working, but who knows for how long given the current economic situation, it is only the chains that can afford the astronomical rents and rates :(
