ali-s
I am thinking of increasing my flock by 4 very soon so I have been looking at local places selling chickens. A place in Aberdeenshire are asking £15 for a POL brown hybrid chicken. £60 in total plus petrol getting to and from the place and my time taken up with driving there and back which could be up to 2 hours each way. Glencroft Poultry in Yorkshire who I have bought Chickens from before are selling a POL brown hybrid chicken for £6. £24 in total plus £40 delivery. £4 dearer but no travelling for me. I think Glencroft will be getting my business unless I can find anything cheaper very soon.

sparkysmum
Hi Ali, I saw an ad in our Post Office for POL warrens for £10 I think. I could follow this up for you if you like but you'd still have to travel Have you tried Practical Poultry for local breeders
Olly
I paid £46 for three POLs a few weeks ago ... I think two were £14 and the Skyline was £18 or something like that. It does depend on what the 'brown' hens are I suppose.
Stevie
The four i recently bought cost me a wholesome £10 each.
Lewis
One of the local farms: "Point of lay hens from £18.50 each" They do sell other chickens though, and have unsexed pure breeds from £5, but you have to choose on your own and they wouldn't replace cockerels for hens. chelsea
I paid £14 for my Maran, we can get "brown" hens around here for a simlar price. My cochins however were £38 each and are the most useless of all my chickens!
Wolfie
I found a site cheshirechickens.no-ip.co.uk that do Warrens for £5.50 each or 5 for £25. 18 weeks old POL. But Cheshire IS quite a way from you! I have not dealt with them, just found the site, so I'm not recommending them, just found the site. Redwing
I think up to about £18 is fair, it does cost a bit to raise a bird to POL, also many suppliers of hybrids buy them in so they need to make money too For the pet/semi pet market I dont think thats too expensive for a pet If you are buying 20 or so for an allotment flock then it would seem expensive though At the end of the day they must sell at those prices so must be worth that to someone
Cooks
you can get ex batts for free! We are asked for a donation in this area.....however large or small, just something Sha x Ditto here. I think they say minimum £1 yes and IMO it should be more. Down here Goldlines or columbian blacktails £12.50 each

Clur
Prices seem to have gone up! 3 years ago when we got our first hens, they were £9 each for brown hybrids. Late last year we got three more (similar) birds and couldn't find any for less than £20 per hen. Apparently the price at the suppliers had gone through the roof as well unfortunately. Price to pay for chooks becoming 'fashionable' I suppose!!!
Blackrocksrock
Ali I am sure I saw in the local paper hens for sale - not sure if they were chicks though but a friend of mine is getting about 200 black rocks and he said I could have some if I wanted to buy any but I dont need any - Depends what you are needing and if you want I can ask him -sure his were point of lay. He sells his eggs and is a farmer with free range hens.
Martin B
There is a battery farmer near me who is converting to FR. He sells POL chickens for £4 each. They are the healthiest and nicest birds we've ever had. Worth asking farmers as well as 'breeders' if you are looking to cut costs.
