Cinnamon
A lot of Australians have cheese and biscuits as a starter, before the main meal. It was a bit of a suprise to us when we encountered it at an Aussie friends house, but it actually worked really well.
majorbloodnock
Sorry Major, your preference for bread, made me think perhaps that you followed the French on the subject of cheese eating. The French of course think we are completely barmy for having cheese after a sweet dessert, and whilst not French I can see why they would think that. I'll happily admit the French make some marvellous cheese, but apart from the bread bit I share few views with them about how to serve it. For instance, they like their brie and camembert quite firm, so it comfortably holds its shape when cut. To me, that's far too young, and is far better once it starts running. As you can probably see by now, I'm not a great respecter of what should and should not be done, and simply do what I've found works well for me. And biscuits (did you notice me unusually bringing a thread back on topic?) with cheese just don't give me the satisfaction that bread does. chickenNutter
Major, you are very wrong. It has to be Carr's Table Water with cheese, or a nice Bath Oliver - it's texture thing. With regard to sweet, it must be Rich Tea - so versatile, and holds its shape for dunking. I think my affinity with the Rich Tea goes back to childhood, they were the break time snack at my Kindergarten, and I was biscuit monitor, which meant that, at the end of breaktime, when you returned the biscuit tin to the cloakroom where it was stored, you could shut the door, and cram at least another five or six into your pockets and mouth, and eat most of them on your way back to the classroom. Although I like nay biscuits including my own homemade giner meringue biscuits, I cannot imagine a life without Rich Tea.
Plum
Wow you are talking biscuits. First thing I did after I left home to make my way in the big wide world (nurses home) was to buy a packet of biscuits and eat them all at one sitting - rich tea can't beat a custard cream though
The Dogmother
Ah, now Rich Tea biscuits sandwiched together with real butter...... AAaaaahhhhhh Does anyone else remember the finger rich tea biscuits? A real treat was for my Nonna to give us two with butter in between.... Cinnamon
I do also have a soft spot for Nice biscuits. And I have discovered these handmade Ines Rosalis Torta things at Waitrose. They are a sort of big flaky pastry biscuit made with olive oil, studded with fennel seeds & topped with glazed, cracked sugar...divine Perfect for people like me who enjoy savoury & sweet together. They were VERY popular in the hampers this year
Geoid
Major, you are very wrong. It has to be Carr's Table Water with cheese, or a nice Bath Oliver - it's texture thing. No he isn't, if he likes his cheese with bread, let him have it with bread. Just because his personal tastes are different does not mean he is wrong. Anyway, this thread is about biscuits, not crackers

CallyChook
I cant believe I'm the only one to say this... MALTED MILKS!! Delicious for elevenses with a milky coffee or a cup of tea. nom nom nom, I can easily eat a while packet in a sitting. Also have to agree with major re cheese, while I like both colours of wine, my choice of main course will always be a red meat if available, or a meaty fish like cod, and red wine goes best with that kind of food. Cheese to follow finishes giving me a nice full tum, preferably with a chewy thick skinned bread. Port is essential. Then for afters a fruity pud (or if i am just feeling like a piggy, toffee/caramel loveliness) with a glass of pudding wine is my idea of happiness. As if I ever eat like that - not since I've had a family certainly, not even for my wedding!

WitchHazel
I rarely eat biccies. There is one that I find hard to resistL Bahlsen Messino Like Jaffa Cakes but much, much, MUCH better. Softer cakey bit, dark chocolate, fabulous orangey middle. Once I had eaten these, I could not go back to McVities. I can EASILY scoff a whole packet in one sitting. M&S do a very similar product (so similar, it might be the real thing with an M&S wrapper). Handily, they are often bunded in pairs, so I get two goes. Nom nom nom. redhotchick
It's too difficult to choose! We can rule out Jaffa Cakes (Claire G) as they are a cake. (the clue is in the name ) Millionaires Shortbread, or just shortbread, or caramel biscuits, or dark chocolate digestives..I said it was too difficult! Going on that logic, surely then Shortbread is bread. You got me! I really didn't think that through did I!
scarlettohara
Nice biscuits but not the ones you get now - the original big ones

Valkyrie
Scottish shortbread is the nicest (and so easy to make your own version). Choccy digestives (with or without the toffee are nice oooh and figgie biccies. I liked the malted milk ones too. Haven't scoffed biccies since . . . Christmas. Won't buy them or I'll eat them. gongladosh
Lincoln biscuits! They remind me of being a nipper. Does anyone know if they are still on sale?
Valkyrie
Did they use to have lots of little k"Ooops, word censored!"by bits all over the top?
gongladosh
that's the one - I think they even had the word 'LINCOLN' in the middle (but I might be wrong) A prince among biscuits - perfect for dunking! foulbird
You have all got me thinking now,& I am thinking Digestives, because they are the only biccie that is great with cheese too Now that's something I've never quite got on with; biscuits with cheese. For me, the only things to accompany the cheese board should be proper bread and a decent bottle of red. I'll accept Port within the definition of red wine, and live with a fruit bowl to one side, but biscuits? Not for me. oh, I am so with you on this one but unfortunately, being wheat and dairy intolerant and on a low GI diet I'm stuck with oatcakes and a little bit of cottage cheese... given the opportunity I'd stuff myself on Ginger Nuts but they give me heartburn they're very nice with a bit of Barkham Blue... I feel sorry for myself now...
Poached Egg
Nice biscuits but not the ones you get now - the original big ones I knew it was a bad move to look at this thread again WANT BISCUITS I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks these have changed. I remember the flavour and texture being different too - better of course. I vote homemade
