Mrs Webmuppet
Help oh wise Omleteers.........Little Miss Webmuppet has got tonsillitis . She has got antibiotics and Ibuprofen medicine. Do you have any words of wisdom on the subject? How long is she likely to suffer for? What's the best things for her eat/drink? I haven't got any tonsils so I have no knowledge of this illness......I'm a child of the 60's when the trendy thing to do was to have tonsils removed
sjp
she could suffer with them until she has them removed I know I did, I had mine removed late 60's early 70's. the only good thing about Tonsilitis was the unlimited ice cream I could have under doctore orders you understand . at the time it was the main recommendation to help with the pain and swelling. it was also the first thing you got to eat after the op as it was easy to swallow it's still to this day the first thing I use for a sore throat
kinsk
I was of an age where the trend had gone the other way so you just had to suffer. Used to get it once a year as a teenager then nothing until the Christmas before last where I could barely swallow. Ice cream is really good. The numbing sprays can help. Gargling with oraldene works, it's vile red stuff but it works. Likewise gargling with disolvable asprin can help. Pleanty of fluids which is hard to keep up when you don't want to swallow. Jules.
I have no advice to give sorry apart from if LMW is under 16 she shouldn't have asprin to gargle with even though it is very good for inflammation
Mrs Webmuppet
I don't think I will have any problem with the unlimited ice cream for her. Some how I don't think I will be able to get a 12 year old anywhere near Oraldene (I have used it and it really is vile stuff), I won't give her aspirin anyway. I remember the oodles of ice cream from when I had my tonsils (and adenoids) removed..... Just signed up for a free trial of one of those movie channels too so she can veg out on the sofa. kinsk
Some how I don't think I will be able to get a 12 year old anywhere near Oraldene (I have used it and it really is vile stuff), I agree it's really vile stuff, when I refused it I was told that I clearly wasn't that ill then
Christian
I have suffered for years but too scared to have them removed. Lots of fluids. Sucking ice cubes helps as does Ben and Jerry's Phish food ice cream (other flavours aren't as effective) Soluble aspirin as a gargle if she is 16+ also helps. Salty water if under 16. Rest is also key! Hope she is better soon.
Mrs Webmuppet
Thank you Christian.......that happens to be one LMW fav ice creams too!
Lavenders_Blue
I had my one and only bout of tonsillitis aged 18 and seem to remember that I mostly ate pureed food I ditto the ice cream suggestion as it slips down easily and soothes the tonsils (and is good for the soul) and then anything squishy to eat. I think I had a lot of tomato soup and mashed potato!
chuckmum6
I had tonsillitis before Christmas, felt rotten for several weeks and got an respiratory infection too which dragged everything out for even more weeks. I sucked ice and let lemon sorbet dissolve down my throat, fizzy drinks seemed to help as did the movie channel and my duvet. It's rotten all the best to her! Alis girls
I too am from the "Christian school of bottling out " of a tonsilectomy! Got tonsilitis 2 days before op and they cancelled it. Got another date and bottled it. I suspect mine was stress as got it 5 x in 2006 and not had a bout since - was moving house that yr an trying to get ES into descent secondary school. All that others have suggested will help. Get well soon LMWM
redhotchick
Lots of good advice above. Controversially, and I won't be popular for this, but I would avoid ice cream! * ducks to avoid abuse being hurled at me!* I can't believe no one has suggested home made chicken soup! So comforting! Christian
I too am from the "Christian school of bottling out " of a tonsilectomy! Cracking! Had 6 lots of it in 12 months several years ago and now only get it when really run down. I don't even get the aches and pains now, just the throat.....Someone else mentioned not eating ice cream (evil do gooders ) but not sure why? Something about dairy and muscus production or something maybe? It works for me!
chickencam
I remember having it really badly when breast feeding YD, I was soooo hungry but really struggled to eat anything solid, just about managed wheatabix with lots of warm milk. I usually felt better within 48 hours of starting antibiotics. Haven't had a full on bout since then, but had it loads when I was a teenager, it helped me pass my O levels because I had enforced revision time off with really rough bout which turned into nasty chest infection about 6 weeks before them, thank god not during. Hope she feels better soon, I think that it makes you feel worse than flu.
Saronne
I, too am a tonsillectomy bottle-outer! I used to get it a lot as a teenager. It made me feel really, really poorly. My skin ached and my muscles and joints hurt and I felt so run down. Then I started taking chewable vitamin C tablets (low-ish dose) daily and I never seemed to get another bout of it . Might have been a coincidence.. who knows?
Lewis
It's wierd you mention it, I had it a few weeks ago and felt ill with it, went to the Doctors and got antibiotics. Started feeling better after 3 days and thought it was sorted. I had 10 days of antibiotics (took full course, so isn't that) and finished on Monday... Last night I was aware they were hurting but not too much but then tonight they're hurting quite a bit - but at least I don't feel ill in myself with it this time. Wondering if it's 'cos I've had exams? Don't think I'm stressing too much but know haven't been sleeping properly...
Christian
Mine started around A level exam time Lewis. Stress is a major factor I think.
Bramble
I think the "don't-eat-ice-cream" piffle is something to do with cold things making sore throats worse (whether they are actually supposed to be worse, or just feel worse, I don't know, it's complete twaddle as far as I'm concerned ), but I have to say the ONLY think that helps sore throats for me is ice-cream, ice-lollies, anything cold, so if that's what LMW wants, I say, "bring it on"! Feel better soon LMW!
ChrisP
I have this regularly, almost hospitalized with it the last 3 times I've had it! I'd recommend plenty of squash, antibiotics, ibuprofen and paracetamol to keep fever down, and plenty of small meals. I never manage to eat enough and get even iller! Soups and pastas are good I've found. With antibiotics I usually improve within 3-4 days, and by the end of the course I'm back to normal! Also, I often get a very high temperature, which will get worse until it peaks (usually the third day of being really ill for me), and then it's almost as if I recover over night! The Dogmother
The poor thing, she has my sympathies. I had it as a child (quite badly) but they were going through a fashion of not removing them. Nothing until Rosie was small (and I was mid-30s) and obviously brought back some bug from nursery, which didn't affect her but laid me low on so many occasions that the GP sent me to an ENT specialist. They said that they were so scarred that any infection was just settling and that if I had one more bout they'd take them out. Never had it since. I can really recommend Chloraseptic Throat Spray (check age contra-indications) or Salvigol (which is available online). I hope she's better soon. Mrs Webmuppet
I can report that the medicine appears to be working and LMW says she is feeling much better. Thank you for all the good wishes and suggestions....she has a plentiful supply of jelly, ice cream and tomato soup!
Luvachicken
I'm glad your daughter is feeling better. Tonsilitis is one of the worst things in my opinion - I suffered a lot as a child and even more as an adult with added ear infections often resulting in perforated ear drums. With 2 little ones it was hard to deal with, especially as one passed it to me and vice versa. If she gets offered the chance to have them out I would. I had mine out when I was 26 and it didn't go well, with an emergency operation for a perforated blood vessel a week later and losing lots of blood. I wouldn't recommend having tonsils out in later life. I hope your daughter continues to get better and I send her the biggest hug because I know how she feels xxxx Btw, warm ribena was always nice. Griffin
I suffered with it frequently in early childhood, grew out of it but when I caught Glandular Fever aged about 14 it came back with avengence. I had it every few weeks until I finally had my tonsils removed aged 16/17. Best thing ever. I had to beg and plead for the op but I didn't see why I should have to suffer on a regular basis just because it wasn't the fashion to whip them out anymore. I rarely suffer from a sore throat now and I don't think I've had a throat infection since. I highly recommend a tonsillectomy for anyone who gets regular bouts of tonsilitis! Lewis
How's LWM feeling? I felt really bad on Saturday morning + couldn't sleep, went up to the out-of-hours at the hospital in the afternoon and was told there wasn't a Doctor on site for the next 2 hours?! Not sure what kind of hospital that is... a Welsh one Went back a couple hours later and was seen, have more antibiotics and she said she'd fax a note to my Doctor for me to give to Uni 'cos of exams etc... Went to collect the prescription + note early this morning and was told I'd have to see another doctor! Finally have both and am feeling a bit better
