Snow

Recommended Posts

Just found out that from this evening Cardiff Council are only gritting priority routes - none of them seem to be near me - in an effort to conserve road salt. Might be 'interesting' on the roads tomorrow, glad I don't have to go anywhere, but Hubby will still have to go to work. :(

Roads are treacherous here, no ploughs or gritters as we are not near main roads.

It's -6 already and OH was catching chicken overnight about 2 miles away and said it went down to -15

Just done 2 hot water bottles and 2 snuggle safes for the chickens

Have you seen Sunday's forecast?......Yikes! :anxious:

Have you seen Sunday's forecast?......Yikes! :anxious:

I noticed that yesterday. :anxious:

I am lucky to be off until Saturday, when I then have to go to work for my annual check. Lots of jumping out of mock planes and medical training. Will not be going if the roads are as bad as they have been this week.

It struggled to get above freezing here today. :? -4 and dropping again tonight.

Snow again this evening, I am thoroughly fed up of it now :(

The poor coal delivery men had to get a tractor to pull the lorry down the lane and on to the road. While one man went off in search of a tractor the other man delivered my coal on foot, a five minute walk along a very icy, snowy lane with each sack and I had ordered 5 sacks. A thank you gift will be waiting for them both when they next deliver my coal.

My car has huge scratches on the bonnet where I slid through the barbed wire fence into the field :(

I am going to have a snow day tomorrow :D and stay safe and warm indoors :D

Isn't it difficult? I live down a tiny lane, about 3/4 of a mile from a "main" road. I am also a teacher... Had two closure days now. I haven't ventured out in my car. Nothing is coming down my lane: the refuse was not collected today and I have walked down it with the dogs and it is incredibly icy underfoot.

My boss has decided that tomorrow our school opens, and has rung me to tell me so. SO I have no option but to risk myself and my car to get into work. I have an 8 mile drive, on ungritted, country lanes, up and down two significant hills.

If I ring up and say I can't do it tomorrow morning, I will be letting all my colleagues and the children and parents down.

I KNOW some parents must find it difficult to understand when they live in a town and see that the school could be open, but this has placed me in a really difficult situation.

For those of you who can avoid it, do so! It is so silly to be placing yourselves in unnecessary risk situations! Stay warm!

You situation is similar to mine - country lanes & hills all round.

Both school & college are rural,so shut till Monday at the earliest, and just as well too with over a foot of snow still on the ground, and compacted on the roads

If its risky you shouldn't even try to drive in, these are extreme conditions and people will understand I am sure.

Still lots of snow on the ground here and very cold. 2 youngest off school again tomorrow but ES has to go (all go to same school) although no Swindon school buses running. He is not a happy bunny but is in GCSE year and has work that really needs completing. We all went out to the cinema tonight - no ticket booking required as dead quite

Our housing estate is a nightmare! its the ice thats causing the problem now! we got stuck getting on to our driveway, then OH sister phoned as she has locked herself out her house! we started going up there, (slight hill) but got half way then started sliding back down the hill narrowly missing the car parked on the side of the road!! even the main roads around here arent great! i think im going to have problems getting off the driveway in the morning as the little bit thats thawed today is just going to freeze causing more ice!!

When is it going to stop! they have said we will have more snow on the weekend now as well!

Oh dear Ali what a day you have had - Have you got snow tyres as they really do make a difference - I bought some last year which can be used all year and they get me about no probs and we have really difficult conditions and cannot get parked in aberlour off the road due to the snow! Your poor car - my little panda was the best thing I ever had on the snow and believe me I have driven for many a year on the stuff. Have a snow day tomorrow and keep cosy - well done your coal men - a wee dram for them me thinks eh! - will catch up with you someday

I have 2 bottles of whisky that I intend to give them. A Craggenmore 10 year old single malt and a Glenmorangie 12 year old single malt, I know nothing about whisky as I hate the stuff :vom: so I don't know if they are any good

Yes, we will have to catch up one day..... when the weather is warmer :D

I have heard you can't get winter tyres up here at the moment, I wonder why

2 people from my work have got them no problem in last couple of days but other places have a waiting list - good for the garages eh!

By the way those whisky's are great ones.

It's hard to see how they are going to be any better off next week with more snow and freezing temperatures forecast.

We're supposed to be going away at the weekend to Southampton for a 50th birthday party. Can't see that happening somehow. I think we'd be ok to travel here but I know its been bad down there. Plus we're worried about the snow thats coming Sunday.

Also got to try to get DD back to uni. She has exams starting on Wednesday. The uni has said that if they can't get back then they can take the exams - in August! She should be finished with uni by June so I can't see that she would want to do that.

ES at school today, YS off again despite clear main roads. I think Head will get a lot of flack next week. As usual NHS staff get in and struggle with staff shortages. Its starting to wear thin with me as most of kids and staff are local and its their ediucation for goodness sake. I think everyones getting a little hacked off, that and trying to get around. Sorry had to moan. :x

Ann, the M3 is actually fine. OH had to drive the Guildford (other way on the M3) but it was completely clear, so you should be ok driving to Southampton. :D I see what you mean about the snow on Sunday though

Thanks for that Christian, I think we might wait until tomorrow morning to see what the weather is going to do Sunday, they might have got it wrong. We don't want to get stuck down there. Its a no children party so don't want to get stuck down there with YS up here (although obviously he would be in his Nanny's care so he'd be alright)

We can cancel the hotel booking up until 2 tomorrow. :?

One of the biggest problems is the stupid litigation law in this country which states that if you clear your driveway pavement etc etc then you are liable if anyone slips over whereas if you do not it is an act of god. It all came about when someone sued in a case where a pathway had been cleared but not very well and it caused injury when someone slipped.

What is really annoying me is the lack of personal responsibility that people are prepared to take. We can all see the conditions and take a view on whether or not we attempt to do what we have to do. Life would be so much easier if as is the case in a lot of other countries as soon as snow came down it was cleared from pathways etc, it the wouldn't become compacted and icy and we could all get about much more easily.

Sorry rant over

I didn't realise this was the case  I have been ranting at why everyone can't do their bit by clearing a space outside their house so that the pavements were safe to walk on. How ridiculous  Someone told me that in some countries it is illegal NOT to clear outside your house.
