stupid stupid stupid

Recommended Posts

I am feeling stupid for the first time in i don't know how long i didn't lock my front door before i went to bed and woke up to find we had been burgled.

The took lap tops phones bags ds passports ds and the money box with £500 holiday money in.

Feel stupid and scared that there were people in my house when i was asleep and i didn't know. My boyfriend is livid as it is always me who locks the door and i was up last.

Spent the morning ring police banks and locksmiths as my keys were in my bag. The lap top had photos and work and really upset as it was my fault.

Poor you

We had similar when OH forgot to lock his car and had the sat nav, ipod and cds stolen from his car. (Insult to injury was the cd trail away from the house where the thieves had thrown away the music they didn't like). The thought that people go around checking doors at night in your road isn't great either. I think events like this make you feel as if it was your fault, but remember, THEY were the ones that broke the law, last time i checked forgetting to lock a door wasn't a crime. Unfortunate, but not a crime. Hope everything pans out for you, once you have new locks, be extra careful as someone must be trying your doors (Sorry, thats not helping, but true i guess) Maybe get an alarm (Or a dummy one) for the front of your house so people would think twice.

Ah bless, really sorry to hear this!!! How anyone can live with themselves when they do these things is beyond me!!! One thing is you have to think is that what would they have done if you had disturbed them, maybe you were better off asleep!! :)

Chin up, and good luck with sorting everything out!! :D

Really sorry to hear your news. It makes me so mad when I hear about people getting burgled. It smacks against everything I believe in. We have been burgled before but never when we were in. Apart from loosing treasured and valuable possessions it's the intrusion of unwelcome strangers in your home that really infuriates me.

Try not to blame yourself. You did nothing wrong. I hope they catch them and for once give them a punishment they deserve.

thanks feeling a bit better now as the brand new laptop I thought they nicked was upstairs !!!!

Had a fun day of locksmiths and police it is a pain to sort this stuff out, one thing is certain it won't happen again I am locked in as we speak!

Going to investigate an alarm for the house it was something we were always going to get but just never got round to so it is at the top of the list now.

It's horrible - I had my new car broken into and stuff nicked - it was all locked away in the boot (same as it was with the old car) and none of it of real value. It's an awful feeling to know people have gone through your stuff.

Our neighbours over the road were burgled, just like you while they were asleep, a few weeks ago. Interestingly, they are the only house on the street without an alarm box outside.

Please don't beat yourself up too much, as has already been said it was the burglars who broke the law, not you.

Good news on the laptop though! :D

One person I know of had someone steal their keys, break in WITH them and then take both their cars. Burglars are getting more sneaky as well as desperate.

So sorry to hear this - it's happened to me, too. A few positive thoughts - firstly, don't blame yourself, as others have said, you didn't break the law, Also, be glad you DIDN'T hear anything and get up - things could have been worse. I've been burgled a few times, yes it's upsetting and time-consuming and irritating, but at the end of the day you and your OH are alive and well and (presumably) you were insured, so you'll be able to replace the things you've lost, except of course for the photos.

If you feel stupid ... well, I'd been burgled once, and had an alarm fitted. And I went to bed and didn't bother setting it (it would have covered the downstairs area while I was upstairs). Now that WAS stupid! You'll never forget to lock the door again, I bet.

Awful I can't imagine how awful it must feel, but as has already been said, better that than waking up and confronting them.

And I would urge anyone with a decent motor to make sure you put the keys somewhere hidden at night, thefts of motor vehicles with keys is increasing as manufacturers make them harder to break into. And don't leave the key inside your door if you have a cat flap. Bolts top and bottom are good, makes it harder for them to open with one smashed pane of glass as they can't get both. And e mail photos or copies of to someone you trust so if you lose them (even in a PC crash) you can still get to them (Ikeep meaning to but haven't got round to it :roll: )

If it's something you're never likely to sell on, like your stereo or PC, or TV, then write your name or postcode or something on it in BIG BLACK LETTERS - doesn't have to be somewhere you'd see it all the time, the back, or underside, makes it impossible to sell on, or use an ultra violet pen and advertise the fact that you've done it (I think you can get kits for this)

I hate burglars, I hate distraction burglars more, but any invasion of someones privacy and theft of something personal, that someone has worked hard for, or has sentimental value.....ten minutes in a locked room with them please, I'd like to impart my personal and professional opinion in person.

Oh so sorry to hear that you were burgled :( As everyone has said, please don't feel stupid. I went out the other week and forgot to lock the door  I was shaking when I realised but thankfully no-one had tried the door.

I hope you are alright and not too shaken x

Don't feel stupid, I suspect we've all forgotten to lock up before now I know I have

do people really check doors are locked and get in if they find them unlocked

Sadly yes, there is a nice estate in the next town that has burglars trying patio doors every night. The police realised when they had lots and lots of burgled householders plaintively saying 'but it was the first time I'd ever left it unlocked'. I'd have never considered it and it isn't a nice thought to realise you have someone trying your door every night

Estates where there are multiple escape routes and are easily accessible for the motorway are popular for this apparently/

I really feel for you. I've never been burgled and am incredibly lax at locking doors etc. It is not unknown for me to go out and leave the front door wide open, accidentally, so don't beat yourself up. You were unlucky. I hope it doesn't take you too long to get everything sorted.

Oh how awful for you. :(

I had a friend who had her handbag snatched from her kitchen table in the middle of the day when she was in the house  ........... She had only left it for a few minutes; her back door was shut but unlocked at the time.

She couldn't believe it and was convinced she was going mad until the handbag and unwanted contents were found in several streets away

We also had a neighbour report seeing someone walking up our road trying all the parked car doors during the night.

It is unbelievable what some people with no scruples will do.

I hope you are able to sort out your losses soon ((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))

So sorry to hear your news - don't be too hard on yourself.

it would have covered the downstairs area while I was upstairs

We have an alarm like that. Setting it to 'Full' , set all the sensors - so whole house covered. Setting it to 'Part' only sets the downstairs sensors. So can sleep and move around upstairs without setting off alarm. Its very reassuring as I think most burglers would run if the alarm went off AND they heard people upstairs (with phones to call police) - especially good if/when OH away.
