Egluntyne
Am I alone in not fretting about the top of my soap dispenser? I give it a wipe every now and then and we haven't all died of cholera ..... and isn't this what the supreme being, in her infinite wisdom, gave us elbows for? http://www.dettol.co.uk/no-touch-handwash-system/index.php Is it me? C&T
Not just you!! I can't help but feel that by the time you touch your soap dispenser your hands are already dirty - that is after all why you want to get at the soap. You then wash your hands with the said soap, and voila - you have clean hands. I do hate the dettol ad's. We do need dirt in our lives - and unless you have the very young/old/infirm to cater for, you do not need to bleach every surface of your home every 5 minutes to remove any trace of anything - your average home is not a walking death trap! grrrrrrrr. Feel better now - thankyou!

chick wiggle
Definately not just you Egluntyne, i thought when i first saw this ad, that once you've washed your hands, you dont touch the soap dispenser thingy again anyway. I dont see the point either Just new ways of getting our money
Rhapsody
I never worry about this kind of thing and hardly ever wash my hands. This morning I saw an ad for anti-bacterial detergent marketed at mums washing their kids bedsheets! Makes you wonder what some people get up to really... Tiggy
I saw an article at work, some prof in bacteriology recconds that all this stuff is a waste of time & we are just storing up trouble for ourselves, good old fashioned soap powder to wash clothes, soap & hot water is all we need,, even those gel detergents are really a money making con - I do get those because they are easier to carry
craftyhunnypie
Well I don't use hand driers anymore, because I heard that they are full of germs. So I just shake my hands & let them dry naturally. I've seen that advert & thought cor, never really thought about the top of a soap dispenser! Emma.x
..lay a little egg for me
I saw an article at work, some prof in bacteriology reckons that all this stuff is a waste of time & we are just storing up trouble for ourselves, good old fashioned soap powder to wash clothes, soap & hot water is all we need,, even those gel detergents are really a money making con - I do get those because they are easier to carry He is absolutely right, killing off all the susceptible bacteria just leaves the field clear for the 1% that Dettol doesn't kill to multiply and then no amount of Dettol-ing will kill them. The 99% thing always makes me cross and I generally shout at the TV whenever the ad comes on. When there are millions and millions of bacteria in every square inch of worksurface, killing 99% leaves an awful lot of bugs! Most of those 99% are completely harmless (they may have come from that probiotic yoghurt that you spilled earlier ); the few that are not will be neutralized by our immune systems. Antibacterial products have their place but not in the home IMHO. Definately not just you Egluntyne, i thought when i first saw this ad, that once you've washed your hands, you dont touch the soap dispenser thingy again anyway. I dont see the point either Just new ways of getting our money Absolutely agree.

Lewis
I did think the principle of not having to touch the top was stupid, if you're going to wash your hands ... but I like the idea of having one
chickweed
I had a stylish ceramic soap dispenser in my bathroom. It took me ages to disccover that the horrible smell in the bathroom was coming from the underside of the dispenser which was unglazed. The soap that had been absorbed into the base of the dispenser was obviously going bad. I've stuck to plastic since. At least plastic can be washed if necessary. The Dogmother
Hmmm, no not just you - me too. I'm of the speck of dirt doing you no harm school. I refill my soap dispensers with Ecover washing up liquid and a few drops of Tea tree oil. Rosie and I seem to have pretty robust immune systems. I think i might try that, but will have to find something else other than tea tree oil as hubbie comes out with a bad reaction to it....I do not have a spotless house (have far too an interesting life to spend it doing housework) and i am convinced that too much cleaning makes you ill. I used to eat dirt and pull apart worms when i was a kid, I am still alive. Oh and as for eating strawberries in the field without washing... well that was all the fun. Goldstar
No, not just you, me too. My 7 year old daughter has just been to wash her hands, I asked the usual question "Have you used soap?" She the replied "No, there are a thousand germs on the top of it." I then explained as calmly as possible that she would wash the germs off with the soap. I hate these adverts. Alis girls
I made the mistake of telling YS 9 to go and wash his hands in the toilet I meant in the sink in downstairs loo. he retorted " thats disgusting" till i explained I meant the sink thankfully my kids ignore everything I say
Lesley
....and, another point......when anything is sold that dispenses the 'right amount' they generally dispense what they want you to use.......usually twice as much as you need, including clothes wash or dishwashing tablets! I use liquid laundry wash and have used half (or less) than the manufacturer recommends for years.

majorbloodnock
I have a son who, when covering his mouth to sneeze during dinner, invariably gets his hand no closer than 6 inches to his mouth. Since he knows he'll get told off by me for doing that, he steals a wary glance at me at the same time, meaning he's actually facing me come sneeze time. I have a young daughter who's at just the right age for believing noses are interesting things designed to be explored by fingers. She also likes helping me cook. She also the mouth the most convenient tool for cleaning her fingers, and she loves giving parents lots of kisses. Both kids scratch their bums when they itch, and it often seems to occur shortly before they happen to hand something (cutlery, cups, plates, fruit etc.) to other members of the family. Both kids have adventurous palates, but my daughter isn't yet old enough to realise it's not good form to take something from someone's plate, then put what's left back if she doesn't like it. ...and I'm supposed to worry about my soap being dirty? Seagazer
and i am convinced that too much cleaning makes you ill. I used to eat dirt and pull apart worms when i was a kid, I am still alive. Oh and as for eating strawberries in the field without washing... well that was all the fun. I agree with you on the too much cleaning! And I also used to eat dirt - I used to make worm pies and apparently I used to eat them I survived.
