Boring question - which vacuum cleaner to buy?

Recommended Posts

I know it is dead boring to think of vacuum cleaners after Xmas  but with the sales on I thought now would be a good time to get one that really works. But which one, there are just so many at John Lewis :eh:

Is a Dyson really better? I have a Victorian terraced house that is all tall and thin with 5 floors with about one room on each so I desperately need something that is light to take up and down all these stairs. The rooms are also small and jam packed with old furniture so I could do with something that goes round things easily. I also have dogs so could do with one that has a good sucking action to it even though I mostly have rugs on polished wooden floors, rather than fitted carpets. I don't mind at all if the container has to be emptied every time I vacuum - that is not a concern, lightness and manoevreability (if that is a real word) are more important. Would one of those little Dysons I keep seeing advertised, be a good bet :anxious:

Miele Cat and Dog!

Had one about 15 years ago when I was with my ex and it was fab. When we split I bought a Dyson as it was the next big thing which weighed a ton and really wasn't all that (in my opinion). Kept it 10 years and treated myself to an Orek upright a couple of years ago (QVC - lurrrve those monthly payments) which was excellent but still hankered after a Cat and Dog as have 3 cats, lodgers, students AND an Edwardian house with stairs, dust and ever multiplying cobwebs.

Guess what - Miele Cat and Dog was on Easipay  just before Christmas and Yes I treated myself and its awesome. Even better now than my 1980's model. It's worth reading the reviews on QVC as its a big purchase. If you bought on QVC you can return in 30days if you don't like it (but don't know how competitive the price is).

Go girl - get the Cat & Dog with the turbobrush.

JL have the premium pet one for £199 at the moment plus you can extend the warranty to ten years for £30 through Miele.

Mines had to have no repairs though at all only bag and filter changes in the 17 + years I've had it. We're a mix of carpet, floor and lino and it still sucks so strongly that it will lift up the lino if I don't have it on a low setting.

Another vote for the Miele Cat and Dog; I always had cheap or inherited vacuums, and they never lasted, what with the sheer volume of animal fluff etc  I borrowed a friend's Dyson for a while but it was absolute rubbish and really heavy to use. I splurged on the Miele and it has to be the best vacuum ever. Bags and filters are cheap on ebay too. :D

Dyson all the way, they are perfect if you have dogs and the aftercare is brilliant. They replace any parts quibble free, my motor blew up and they came and collected fixed it and returned within a week. I recently bought the little hand held variety too and its brilliant for staircases and recharges really quickly. My Mum bought a Dyson and had it was hopeless didnt suck, obviously had a fault on the machine she complained and they swapped it for a new one and she now loves hers too. :D

I had a Dyson, I liked it but it was too heavy

it was a wedding present and lasted a fair few years. After that I had a series of vacuums which I sucessfully killed (not cheap ones either but then we are a particularly filthy household  )

We bought a new one recently and had a budget of £100 (to spend more just seems plain daft to me) and looking at the number of professional cleaners that use Henry hoovers we decided to get one of those and are extremely pleased with it so far, its powerful and our carpets have never been cleaner :D

We had a Dyson and it was always blocking and breaking down. OH had a lot to say about it :shock: Eventually we threw it out and are now using a run of the mill Panasonic which is so much better. We do not have animal hair to suck up though so I am sure some of the special ones would fit the bill better :!:

Another strong Miele cat and dog fan here; I've never had a better vaccuum :D However, I'd get yourself to a shop and do a picking things up test to see how it compares with something smaller. I am particularly weak and feeble and weight was an issue for me, the Miele is fine but then I only have 10 stairs to go up, not 5 floors!

I have a Dyson for carpet and wood floors. I am pleased with its suction and it picks up well after the dog and a long haired teenager! The only problem is its heavy. OH has to carry it around for me as I can't lift it. Not had it long so can't comment on durability. I have had got through 2 uprights (a Panasonic and I think the other was a Hoover) and a cheap cylinder one in the last 5 years. Hopefully this one will last longer.

I like my dyson upright (old model) but wouldn't use it if I had to carry it up to do 5 floors  We have a henry as well because we've been doing renovations, excellent on rubble etc but hard work to use compared to the dyson and again I wouldn't carry it up several flights of stairs as it's quite bulky to carry.

Dyson servicing is very good I'd look seriously at a lightweight dyson cylinder, I'm considering getting one to leave upstairs

We've had two Dysons over the years and they were both pants I'm afraid. We've had a Henry for a few years now (actually about 8 years  ) we bought him after we had the house extended and he coped with all the dust and rubbish. He is quite bulky but has never broken down.

I have hankered after a Miele cat and dog though  and will probably try one if Henry ever bust.

I bought a Sebo after hearing that they were the only ones that John Lewis recommended. :P

It's amazingly powerful & really quiet too - I have a mix of wood floors & carpets.

When he goes I will 100% be gettintg another Sebo cylinder

Another vote here for Sebo. I have had mine for years and it still sucks like new. I will definitely get another too. My model's probably not the best for stairs though. I bought a cylinder model in another make (can't remember which and I'm not at home, but it was recommended by cat-keeping friends) specifically for doing the stairs. It is ok, but I would rather lug my upright Sebo up and down the stairs.

We had a Dyson and I am not keen and would never get another one, perhaps I was just unlucky.

Nothing sucks like a Dyson IMO. I have an animal upright downstairs (we have 2 very hairy dogs) and the smaller Dyson "city" which is very lightweight upstairs. The downside with the Dyson is the weight of them. :?

I used to clean holiday cottages with a Henry and by far it is the worst vacuum I have ever used, after 4 hours of hoovering cottages I felt like tossing the thing out the cottage into the nearby lake!
