Do you remember the first record you owned?

Recommended Posts

-or downloaded I guess!

The first record I remember owning, which was a single, was Elton John's 'Your Song'. That would have been early 70s but not the year it was released. Bit vague I know. Up until then we only had Mum & Dad's Top of the Pops compilations which were awful and a variety of Musical Song extravaganzas. They also loved country & western music, Gene Pitney and all that.

It was exciting to be buying my own music.

I got the Wombles Greatest Hits for Xmas I think it was about 1975ish.

I remember my Dad always listening to James Last  Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass  and the shadows.

Me & a mate used to spend our pocket money on Smash Hits so we could learn the words to the latest tunes, she would buy it one week me the next as we couldn't afford it otherwise.

I think we would have been about 8 at the time

Probably had to be The Wombles, or Puppy Love, or Claire by Gilbert O'Sullivan - boy did I hate that last song; some wit bought if for my birthday tat year and I had to endure endless people singing it to me

The earliest songs I remember were Green, Green Grass of Home (Tom Jones) and Yellow Submarine (The Beatles) being playing on our wireless. Both were released in 1966 when I was three so perhaps I remember them being played after that date.

It was a tape (remember them) of Mud Rock (Vol 2) and I loved it.

My parents had AWFUL taste - black & white minstrels, songs from the shows, covers of "popular hits" by unknown (and untalented) groups, oh and Boney M.

My Dad had a long playing single (about half an album) of sea shanties which I also loved, but that was about it.

Was so thrilled with my first tape player and the ability to listen to my own choice of music that I quickly stretched all the tapes by playing them too much - happy days !

The first vinyl lp I bought was Duran Duran 'Rio' and the first cassette was Haircut 100 - now you all know how old I am!

My Mum was into Elvis and country and western but my Dad had far better taste.....The Eagles and The Beatles. Dad and I used to listen to Radio Caroline  ( and occasionally Radio Luxembourg) when Mum wasn't listening ( she is a Radio 2 listener).

Mine would have been either Bryan Adams' album 'Waking up the Neighbours' (I listened to it endlessly on repeat, so much so that I still know ALL the words to ALL the songs  ) or the single 'Young at Heart' by the Bluebells. I am not sure which was earlier. I still have 'Waking up the Neighbours' lurking somewhere but 'Young at Heart' was resigned to the bin many, many years ago

We had lots of those Top of the Pops albums too, I even had a Top of the Tots! It had Long Haired Lover, a couple of Wombles songs and Paper Roses on it among some other great songs of the early 70s. My Mum and Dad had a strange collection including Money M, Cliff Richards and the sound track to Jesus Christ Superstar!

The first I remember buying for myself was a tape: Bat Out of Hell, I've no idea what year it was but I still love it now!!

.........Come White Horses let me ride away.... I LOVED that song and still find myself singing it in my mind from time to time. Well, they do say as you get older it's the distant memories that stay clear :D

I think my first was 'Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree' Either that or Long haired lover which seems to have been a 'popular' choice !!
