Cinnamon
I can't remember if there was a thread started on this or not ,but can't find one if there was Anyhow,I would like to recommend A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES to anyone who has enjoyed the Twilight & True Blood books. It is probably a bit less teen oriented than those books & is a cracking good read, but not an altogether easy one. Lots of quite difficult references to alchemy & ancient literature, but even so its a really good story with witches, vampires & other creatures living together alongside us unsuspecting humans. Olly
I've just read a brilliant book - not new, but I hadn't come across it before - 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield. A novel about a woman who's invited to write a biography of a famous writer, who isn't quite what she seems ... a really cracking good read, it has kept me awake several nights this week because I couldn't put it down! LolaLayla
I have just read "Before I Go to Sleep" by S J Watson for my book club. It is a 'crime thriller' and is about a lady who loses her memory every night she sleeps and has to be told who she is etc by her husband each morning....but all is not what it seems. I found the book a real page turner and most enjoyable.
Cinnamon
Before I go the sleep is really good, isn't it? Took me a while to get into it,but once the story starts to pan out,it is quite unputdownable!
Egluntyne
Just downloaded it. I have just finished Stolen Child by Laura Elliot. It was a well thought out plot. I enjoyed it.
chick wiggle
With holidays and nice easy reads in mind, i have just finished Candles in the Sand by Katie Stephens, definately not a complicated plot and maybe a little predictable, but just very very nice...........made me want to run away to Italy anyway! and 99p in kindle books on Amazon at the moment
loumabel
Cinnamon- have you read any of Kelley Armstrong's books, 'Woman of the otherworld' stories? they are brilliant and if you like the Twilight and True blood saga's you may like them too. I think 'Bitten' is the first one in the series. I am going to read your recommendation of 'Discovery of Witches' Thanks
bigmommasally
I liked "Before I go to Sleep" too. I thought I had already recommended "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern on here somewhere but its worth repeating even if I have because it is such a fantastic book. It's available from Amazon & on Kindle but I haven't seen it in Waterstones yet.
..lay a little egg for me
I've just finished "The rivers of London"by Ben Aaronovitch. I enjoyed it very much. It is another book in the theme of magic existing in the modern world. The different take is that it is written from the point of view of a policeman who gets employed to combat crime committed by magic practitioners. It won an award recently. I'm about to look for the second in the series.
patsylabrador
I was just about to recommend 'Rivers of London'! I'm really enjoying it and for the most part, the author has got the mindset of police spot on. OH has just read 2nd book which he said was even better. I have also started getting a little obsessed with Susan Hill books.
soapdragon
Cinnamon - I LOVED Discovery of Witches too and was gutted when I reached the last page and realised that it was No 1 of a series !!!!!! However, second book is out mid July - I think you can pre order on Amazon so I am on tenterhooks . Anyone ready Diana Gabaldon's fantastic books? Trouble is she writes HUGE books, usually 800 odd pages, and I am very impatient . Diana Norman's books are fantastic; she also wrote four books as Ariana Franklin; very sadly died last year. As you may have guessed, I do love my history
Plum
Good timing, I've been working my way through the last list so ready for some more recommendations . Still reading The Poisonwood Bible. Now ordered Thirteenth Tale and Before I go to sleep.
sadietoo
I'm in the middle of The Seige by Helen Dunmore at the moment....it's beautifully written but harrowing so can only read a bit at a time.... After that I've got Before I go to Sleep and The Knitting Circle waiting on the Kindle..... I did read A Discovery of Witches, back in the summer but renamed it A Discovery of Editing as I felt it could really have done with quite a lot... how many cups of tea can one heroine drink Quite enjoyable though but only three stars for that one from me. ...The Ben Aaronovitch sounds very good and is on my wish list.... Another Susan Hill fan here too Patsylabrador...
Plum
When I go on Amazon 'When God was a rabbit' keeps coming up as a suggestion for me. Is it a good read?
Seagazer
I've just started reading when god was a rabbit (love the title) and it is a good read so far, quirky and has bits that have made me laugh out loud. I was thinking of downloading before I go to sleep the other day so on recommendations I shall get it.

rachel19
If you like Dan Brown books then I'd recommend the Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani.
Willow
The Help I didn't keep up with everything recommended in the previous thread as there were just too many great recommendations to get through so the Help may have been mentioned before. I read this over Christmas and whilst it's fiction it is supposed to be accurate. I was shocked to realise that with it being based in the early 60's the ladies in the book were essentially my parents age and the babies were babies when I was . I'm not great on my dates for modern American history and thought the attitudes described were much longer ago. As fiction I got totally involved in the characters lives. The style of writing in different characters voices worked very well for me.

Cinnamon
You would like it Clare - its about black American servants & how they were treated by the white ladies who hired them. Its very thought provoking, sad & very funny & its also rather lovely as one lady forms a wonderful relationship with a maid she is interviewing for a book she is writing. It set in the deep south, which is always very atmospheric & is very well written too.
The Dogmother
Thanks Sarah, i'll order that one too.
Chickendoodle
I have just finished reading Breaking the Silence by Diane Chamberlain - fantastic book - even had me reading it over my breakfast. Can't give too much away except it concerns a child who has become mute following a trauma, her Mother and an old lady in a nursing home (story told in flashback) I got it for 99p on one of the Kindle special offer days - think it is a bit more now Will try Discovery of Witches as I loved the Kelley Armstrong series. You can't beat a good vampire/werewolf book
